One of the most important things you can do for yourself when getting started as a model, adult entertainer or adult film star is to purchase your own domain name. It is easy and inexpensive to do and there really isn’t a good reason why you shouldn’t do it. In fact it should be the first thing you do once you have decided upon a stage name or performer name.
Notice I said the FIRST, that doesn’t come after telling your friends or sharing it with your new agent. Owning your domain is your responsibility and it should be done before others can do it for you.Think of a domain name as your telephone number, once you have it, you can take it with you no matter what carrier you choose. This way people who want to get a hold of you, follow you or find out info about you will always know where to find you. If you let someone else buy your domain name for you, they in effect, own it. They used their credit card so it is in their name. Now we all like to think that they will be our friend or have our best interest at heart, but truth is, it is your responsibility and one that you should always do on your own.
Buying a domain name ( or registering a domain name ) is very easy and inexpensive to do. There are plenty of places online that you can go to buy your domain name. Do a google search for “domain register”, some of the popular ones are Godaddy.com, Register.com and 1on1.com We actually use and reccomend namecheap.com. We find their rates to be very resonable and service to be exceptional. You will need to know what name you are registering and you will need a credit card or debit card to purchase the domain.
When you purchase the domain name your personal info is attached to that domain name and is visible to anyone that would like to search for it. If you are concerned about keeping your privacy (and you should be) then we suggest making it a private registration which will cost you and extra $10 or so a year, but it is worth it. Spending less than $25 a year to own your domain name is a very small price to pay to control where people can find you.
Even if you do not plan to create a website, blog or do anything with your domain name it is still a good idea to purchase it. If for no other reason than to keep others from making money with your name and off of your hard work. This is a pretty common practice among the “shadier” types in the biz and sadly that includes people that you should probably be able to trust. So do yourself a favor, invest in yourself and own your name on the internet. Choosing the right domain can be tough, especially if the name you want to use is already owned by someone else.
There are some simple rules to follow when choosing a name but we will save that for a future article.
